Paonia Holiday Festivities

Holidays in Paonia

Holiday festivities are abundant in Paonia the weekend of December 5th and 6th.  The whole town comes alive with activities for all ages. The Blue Sage Center for the Arts is honored to be part of the fun! Shop for that special gift on Friday night at the Holiday Art Fair and paint a snowman mug, plate or platter with Pour Farm Ceramics at the Blue Sage.

By far the most popular event will be the Blue Sage’s Kids’ Cookie Cottage Building Workshop where children of all ages can decorate their own graham cracker cottage.  For $5 kids receive a kit, which includes a bag of frosting, a bag of candy and a preassembled cottage.  Kids can decorate their house at the Blue Sage during the Holiday Art Fair or take the kit home to decorate at their leisure.

On Saturday, take a hayride from Homestead market to the Paonia Library to see the new art installation “Generations: Wisdom and Wonder” unveiled, watch a puppet show and shop for books at the book sale. At the Blue Sage, support local artists at the 22nd Annual Holiday Arts Fair. The art fair will host a multitude of artists and crafters in the Blue Sage Loft and Curtis Hall. Santa Claus and his shiny elves will be visiting the Eccentric Artist gallery for photographs and next door to Santa, the Paradise Theater is showing a free holiday movie.

Other happenings include an open house at Homestead Market, specials at Hightower Café, a sale at Elisabethan’s studio, face painting, and a midnight masquerade ball at Wisehart Springs.  Meet and greet Jane Berry, the new Paonia town manager at town hall on Saturday from noon to 1pm.

The Blue Sage Center for the Arts classical series presents Opera Colorado’s Romeo & Juliet on Friday, May 16, 2014 at 7:30pm at the Blue Sage Center’s Curtis Hall, located at 228 Grand Ave. in Paonia. In addition to Romeo & Juliet the concert program includes highlights from opera and musical theatre repertoire, as well as a brief panel discussion and audience Q&A with the artists.  Ticket prices range from $10-$20 and can be purchased through the Blue Sage Gallery at 226 Grand Ave., Paonia, by calling (970) 527-7243 or online at www.bluesage.org.  All seating is reserved.

Romeo & Juliet is an opera by Charles Gounod based on the play by William Shakespeare and tells the tale of “star-crossed lovers” Romeo and Juliet, who meet, fall in love, and choose to risk everything for each other. The story unfolds through rich, sumptuous music and has been arranged to include scenes from Shakespeare’s original play. The production is sung in English with portions in the original French. Updated staging and costumes bring it to life in new and surprising ways. Directed by Cherity Koepke and performed by the Opera Colorado Young Artists, the production is an exciting new take on an old classic.

Opera Colorado Young Artists are a group of 5 emerging opera singers selected from 400 plus aspiring candidates to partake in a 7-month residency program based in Denver.  Part of the residency program includes outreach to Colorado youth through in-school programs and performances for youth.  In addition to the evening concert, the Blue Sage is offering a free performance for Paonia and Hotchkiss High School students in the afternoon as part of its commitment to support arts education in North Fork Valley schools.
