Christina JenningsThe Blue Sage Center for the Arts Classical Music Series is proud to present an evening of classical music featuring flutist, Christina Jennings, and pianist, Susan Ellinger on Saturday, January 31st at 7:30pm.  The duo will perform American composer Aaron Copland’s Duo, Gaetano Donizetti’s virtuosic Sonata in C Major and Gabriel Fauré’s celebrated Sonata in A Major.  The concert will take place at the Blue Sage located at 226-228 Grand Ave. in Paonia.  Tickets range from $10-$20 and can be purchased through the Blue Sage Gallery by calling (970) 527-7243, in person at 226 Grand Ave., Paonia, or online at www.bluesage.org.  All seating is reserved.

This concert is the 3rd concert in the Blue Sage’s 2014-2015 Classical Music Series.  Each concert in the season’s line up is themed around a country and features a composer from that region.  In addition to the concert, a pre-concert cocktail hour presents a food and wine pairing from the evening’s featured region, which for the January 31st concert is Italy.  Food is provided by Backcountry Bistro and the wine is paired by Ashley Trego.  Any concert-goer can attend the cocktail hour for an additional $15.  Reservations must be made in advance.

The evening’s featured Italian composer is Gaetano Donizetti.  While generally known for his operas, Donizetti also composed many other chamber and orchestral works.  His Sonata in C Major for Flute and Piano demonstrates that his command of the exquisite vocal line was not confined solely to his operas and that he could also write in a carefree, infectiously Rossinian vein.

Pianist, Susan Ellinger, is particularly excited to perform Faure’s Sonata in A Major, a soaring and expansive work originally written for violin and piano.  “This piece is a lovely synthesis of all the classical genres leading up to that point in history.  There’s a bit of baroque counterpoint, classical grace, romantic excess and he brings it all together into a ‘new’ style called impressionism.”

Flutist Christina Jennings is praised for her virtuoso technique, rich tone, and command of a wide range of literature featuring works from Bach to Zwilich. The Houston Press declared: “Jennings has got what it takes: a distinctive voice, charisma, and a pyrotechnic style that works magic on the ears.” Ms. Jennings enjoys a musical career made up of diverse performing and recording opportunities, collaborations with living composers, and work guiding young musicians.  She is currently the Associate Professor of Flute at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Pianist Susan Ellinger has performed extensively as both a soloist and chamber musician, presenting recitals at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Lincoln Center’s Bruno Walter Auditorium, Oberlin Conservatory and the Taos School of Music.  She has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Peabody Conservatory of Music Orchestra and as a featured soloist in a series of concerts with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra under the baton of acclaimed conductor Marin Alsop.  She currently resides in Paonia, Colorado where she is the Artistic Director of Classical Music at the Blue Sage Center for the Arts.
